Mark Sain from North Carolina was up this week and Brendan and I got a chance to jam with our computer and guitar guru friend. Pink Humpy Live... ... a fun night at Spence Cafe in West Chester, PA. Downtown Harvest asked us in the afternoon if we could play a set that night, and we couldn't turn it down. Yos couldn't make it, so J filled in on bass and added some vocal harmony to boot. It was a great night and hopefully we'll be playing another show with DTH soon - they sounded great! It was a special treat when Frank from DTH joined us on stage with his saxomophone for the last tune, Jersey Transit Train!

Hey there loyal readers. Just wanted to give an update on the state of the hump:

Practice is kicking back up soon, and hopefully the album recording and re-recording will come along soon after that.
Be sure to check out the Live and MySpace pages for information on shows and such. Upcoming - The Rusty Nail in Ardmore - 8/4/2006 with friends, the Beazely Phillips Band.
Working on some new tunes... they won't be on the album, so look forward to some live fun!
The Pink Humpy Interview given to the Art Institute of Philadelphia will be out soon! Keep checking these pages or the myspace (or both!) for the upcoming video. More video may be available in the future from the interview session.

That should be it for now. A new podcast will be on the way some time in the very near future. Feel free to drop us a comment here on the blog or on the MySpace page... we read them all!

New Music to listen to...

I just wanted to post to say what's up and thank WXPN for introducing me to a new artist. He probably isn't new, but he's new to me. When you get a chance, check out Raul Midon. The video on his myspace page is great. He is very original and soulful and a terrific guitar player. I don't really have much going on, so not much more to say. Now that the band is all back on the same hemipshere, I'm sure new music and dates will be popping up. Keep on the look out!

PH Rendezvous - The Nail

So last night was a fun night. Brendan, Jon and myself were at The Rusty Nail to give our support for friends Downtown Harvest. It was a good night and Downtown was really good. You should check them out when you get a chance for sure...

Plans have been made to get PH back rockin. We have been taking a mini hiatus due to commitments, surgery, and other life changin events and stuff. Rest assured, PH will be back with some fun music very soon!

Rumor Mill: Rumor has it that PH Friends, The Beazley Phillips Band will be in Philly from Chicago towards the end of the summer and dates are starting to get set up for some joint shows. Keep checking back for more information!

What's up ya'll... I have been trying to sift through my music collection to find those songs that feel so good that you can't even remember if you are standing on a busy street in NYC, or you are in your underwear in a doctors office turning your head and coughing. The songs groove or flow so damn much that you can't help but close your eyes and take yourself exactly where the artist wanted you to go... I have come up with a few of mine. (These are in no way related to the other guys of PH). In no specific order:

Move on Up - Curtis Mayfield - Try not to dance or at least bop to this. I dare you.
Big Country - Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Try not to close your eyes and feel peaceful.
Orin O'L - Keziah Jones - Powerful song, but i must admit - i have no idea what it means. :)
The Only Living boy in NY - Simon and Garfunkel - Thanks to the Garden State movie for popularizing this... amazing eye closer.
Summer Madness - Kool & the Gang - This is a song that puts me on the deck at 7pm at the beach with a cocktail and some good friends...
Ne-Ne - Soulive - Just a great great groove... and at the 7:05 mark, it engulfs you.
City of Blinding Lights - U2 - This one is probably because it was so amazing in concert that it has lasting effect on me everytime I hear it.
King of Snake - Underworld - My years as a techno lover come out with this one. I listen to this song (and the entire Dubnobasswithmyheadman album) when I need to have a speed groove in my head to get stuff done at work... figure that one out.
Give it Away - Zero 7 (but this could be LOTS of Zero7 songs) - this song has a "mind removed from body" element...
Release - Pearl Jam - OLD school depression song... don't ask... just know, this one is one of those songs that saved my life.
Grey's Groove - Greyboy - great fusion of hip hop beats and jazz...

What's in Yos' CD player...

Ok all - I am a tech-geek... I don't have a cd player - But I have been listening to a bunch of good stuff recently so I figured I would post up about it. Why? Why not, I say...

First off, I have to thank Jon for introducing me to Sam Prekop. I have been listening to "Who's Your New Professor" for a while and I am really diggin it. I see why Jon digs it too. Some great drumming in this album and Sam's voice is really great. I must say honestly that I don't have any of his other solo stuff or his other project, The Sea and the Cake, but I will be getting some soon. Suggested tracks: Something, Dot Eye, Magic Step and C + F.

I have been listening to an old favorite recently. I have had the playlist on for the last 2 weeks+...Jamiroquai's "Traveling without Moving." As a bass player (and certified funk lover), I am in awe of Stuart Zender's playing. He is killer on this, his last album with Jamiroquai. This is a must own for anyone who either likes fun music or musicians who are into the funk/disco genre. Suggested tracks: You Are My Love, Virtual Insanity, Alright, Drifting Along.

I have been really enjoying the super crisp clean sound of Soulive's "Next" album recently too. As far as playing, these guys are top notch. They have a great groove if you are into the straight up jazz (like myself) but also throw in some pretty wild tracks with guest appearances from Black Thought (The Roots), Talib Kweli, and Dave Matthews. I was told about these guys from Brendan and I bought the "Next" album a couple days later and it didn't disappoint me. Check out these tracks for sure: Ne-Ne, Tuesday Night Squad, Whatever It Is.

That's it for now... I will post up more soon. I might do a CD review on the podcast soon so make sure to keep checking it out... hopefully I will get some more suggestions from B and Jon, but please feel free to suggest anything for myself or the band to take a listen to!

To make a long story short, I was in a van riding shotgun with two other guys I don't know, apparently on hoagie delivery runs. The driver laughs after the first delivery saying the hoagies dropped were stale. We come across an unskilled parallel parker severely impeding our progress, and as we finally got to pass I chuck a hoagie at his ass...
SPLAT!

Well, when I was a kid, I thought - what bumper stickers would my band have when we get big? I still think that today. This all probably stemmed from chillin' on the Wildwood, NJ boardwalk in the late eighties- early ninties. If you don't know why I would think about these thing because of Wildwood, NJ, you just had to be there. Trust me.

Anyway, while reviewing some new Pink Humpy tracks with Brendan over the good ol' net the other day, I started... I couldn't stop:

Well, I thought I had seen a lot... or some... ok, maybe I haven't seen that much - but Brendan has, and he never saw this coming either. Pink Humpy loves staying hydrated - in whatever form that takes. We at Pink Humpy also love the salmon. Some of us love the symbol of knowledge it conveys... some of us love the persistence it stands for while swimming upstream... some of us just love a great smoked salmon steak for dinner. For the latter of the group, we have found something special. Salmon Flavored Soda. Please - hold your mouth until you read. We wouldn't want you to ruin the screen of your computer. See, the soda also accompanies other such sodas as: turkey & gravy, corn on the cob, broccoli casserole and pecan pie. Can you smell the Thanksgiving Holiday right around the corner? Hey, if you can't - you should hook yourself up with some of Jones Soda Co.'s wacky soda beverages. May I suggest the Pink Humpy variety? But if you can't get your fill of the Humpy through a beverage this Thanksgiving - fear not. Come out to the Gryphon Cafe on Nov. 25th for some Pink Humpy Music. Salmon beverage optional.

when i read the exclamation point at the end of a poetry line, sometimes i stop and think, damn. (damn!) i have no idea what i'm reading. it's a bunch of words stuck together like crayons i left sitting on the heat vent over the weekend in my 4th grade class. (true story). why am i reading it anyway? is it for the charity of the writer, to satisfy my own quest for literature, or something entirely less romantic? when i was in 4th grade, i wanted to be a racecar driver when i grew up. now i'm sitting here reading poetry that i don't understand, or won't understand for lack of effort. will it come full circle if i walk a straight line?

maybe if i actually read all those books assigned in high school english, i would understand these poems. maybe i would reflect on the unconventional, ground breaking use of form and time in that poetry line. maybe i could tell everybody about it down at the local non-chain coffee shop and feel cool without my sporty sunglasses and hip untrendy attitude.

either way, i could go for a pop tart and some gatorade right about now. don't have to save any for breakfast tomorrow because i picked up some milk for the box of lucky charms i got on sale at the acme. i'm 27, and i enjoy the games on the back of the cereal boxes. the only difference is that i run the dishwasher. and i don't have to worry about missing the bus. and i no longer run from the things i care most about.

Snow, snow, more snow. Stuck in traffic? Me too. Here's what's in my cd changer:

1. Keziah Jones - Black Orpheus. This album is amazing. Too bad he doesn't seem to ever play live in the US. Pat caught his live show in London and said he was the Nigerian Jimi Hendrix. This dude can sing. And he can play guitar. The nylon string guitar sound on his album is giving me new ideas for some tunes...

2. Steely Dan - Royal Scam. This one has to be top 3 all time for me. When I first got it in 1990, it stayed in my cd player for a month straight. Donald at his best, imo, back into the old days.

3. Erin McKeown - Grand. Cool album, cool lady. Met her at her show at the local borders books and gave her my cd. Never heard from her so she probably thinks it sucks.

4. Roots - Illadelph Halflife. Philly hip hop at its best. Any album that has a line "fuck dallas" is a winner in my book.

5. Flaming Lips - Yoshimi.... These guys are nuts. Blazing their own trail for sure. Great ear opening album. Pat got me into this one somehow.

6. Django Reinhardt - Le Hot Club. Recorded in the 30's and 40's, if I remember correctly. Stephane Grappeli on the fiddle. Classic. I actually taught myself to play "Nuages" and performed it at open mic at the Steel City in Phoenixville. Some kid won the quiz on who wrote the song and got a free Pink Humpy EP. Sweeeeeet!
